Professor Dr. B. M. Mainul Hossain, Director of the Institute of Information Technology at Dhaka University, has been appointed as a member of the Scientific Committee for the International Artificial Intelligence (AI) Olympiad. The committee, comprised of leading global AI researchers and practitioners, oversees the organization and execution of the Olympiad. It includes a Chair, a Secretary, members, and an advisory board, with its tenure set from 2024 to 2027. This marks the first time a Bangladeshi has been nominated to the committee.

In addition to his new role, Professor Mainul also serves as the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN), which is organizing the national segment of the AI Olympiad in Bangladesh.

The AI Olympiad is an international competition focusing on artificial intelligence to inspire young minds, particularly school and college students, to engage with science and technology. The Olympiad provides a platform for top AI students worldwide, selecting and training participants through national competitions in various countries. Selected candidates go on to represent their nations in the international event.

Earlier this year, the inaugural International AI Olympiad was held in August in Burgas, Bulgaria, featuring participants from 32 countries across six continents. The next edition of the Olympiad is scheduled to take place in Beijing, China, in 2025, with participation expected from over 60 countries.
